Hunter Douglas replaced the shade. It has arrived and is waiting for us to install it. It was a lot of work but in the end, is done.

After writing another email explaining that the inspection process was flawed by failing to ID their own product, I climbed the ladder and took a pic of the manufacturing tag on the head rail as well as pics of the metal shavings.

HD agreed to replace the blind as an accommodation. I have received the color swatches and will order and update this as we progress to completion.

Blinds stick at head rail and causes metal shavings to fall into eyes. Lifetime customer satisfaction guarantee... Just call us.

Warranty call response #1: sun damage, buy new blind. Headrail not exposed to sun I say. Known issue. Not covered, buy new blind. But I have 3 exactly alike, I can't do that. Please honor Lifetime Guaranty, Fix Headrail, fabrics is fine. Just a piece of extruded aluminum.

Warranty response #2: known issue. No parts avail for old products. Like duette? Do you even know the model i ask? Ditto above, buy new one, we wont cover. If i want inspection i have to pay for it.

Warranty response #3: same. Unacceptable, I ask to speak to supervisor; none available. Hung up on.

Warranty response #4: i demand to speak to CS management And or legal dept or will call CA consumer affairs for failure to provide basic warranty.

Warranty response #5: get call from VP named Scott S., VP Customer Information. Repeat of the above. He did capitulate to a free inspection. I did restate I have 3 of same model and no prob on either of others. I also have 17 other HD window coverings and previously fallen prey to the "must replace" on 3 other windows and like an ***, did so. No more I say, I'm likely invested beyond $10k.

Installer from Royal Window coverings, San Diego comes out with ladder to inspect. Nice guy but says its a model he has never installed because its older and that he is fairly new.

3 weeks later I follow up with VP. Auto reply, out of country on vacation. I don't care at this point. I have metal shaving in my eyes and going on second RX for steroid/antibiotic drops for eye injury.

VP gets back. Says installer cannot ID the blinds or confirm they are HD because he did not see a label. duh! We knew he had never seen them before, but he never even stepped up on his ladder to see manufacturing label on the headrail. Had he asked i would have handed him a mirror, plain as day, right where it should be, out of plain sight. They are too old; what is a lifetime guarantee? There are signs of use wear and tear. Yeah, it is binding and destroying headrail, ill say there is destructive metal shredding going on for sure. Is that normal wear, heck no. Wear and tear as result of defect. Why not the other 2 have?

This is getting more *** by the minute. As a consolation, they offer me a new blind for $500. Now thats a deal. Only 25% of my monthly retirement check, plus shipping and install i wonder?

This will not be the first or last HD product to find its way to CPSC recall.gov, nor state of CA for action. While some little guys make no noise, this one squeals. I now have eye injury to add to the insult. My recommendation, use butcher paper or newspaper over windows, save an eye, it is a safer, better warranty and more sound than Hunter Douglas window coverings.

Reason of review: Warranty issue.

Monetary Loss: $1700.

Preferred solution: Headrail and truck replaced or replace the whole window. .

Hunter Douglas Cons: Warranty avoidance, Blanket denial with no proof, Customer service, Eye injury, Defective product.

Location: Escondido, California

I have the same Vertiglide from Hunter-Douglas from May, 2000. Sounds old, yes....but the room is used relatively seldomly.

My local repair person just told me that the railings eventually fail from the sliding process, causing the metal flaking. Yesterday, I had to buy a 6-foot railing, to be shipped from Hunter -Douglas, and will have the old blind installed into it locally. Apparently, Hunter-Douglas only carries the old railings....and no other parts. I have a houseful of cellular shades, too.

I'm having better luck with the cordless horizontal shades so far. Yeah, pretty disappointing for a limited "lifetime warranty."
